U15 qualifies for national play-offs

U15 played two games this weekend to end the poule phase of the competition. Two very tough matches but with a happy ending. The first match on Saturday was at Sparta. Some of the team were away studying and missed the cricketing lesson that Sparta gave the team.

Sparta batted first and started quickly with a run rate of 8 per over. The first wicket did not fall until Hidde bowled the opener Krish in the 9th over. At the halfway stage Sparta had scored 115 runs. It was not until their other opener Meet retired on 60, that the bowlers started to have some joy. Tobias took 3 wickets, Nirav 2, Thijn and Hidde 1 each. They were all out in the 27th over, but by then Sparta had scored 191 runs.

Sparta’s bowling was good and they fielded well. Four wickets fell in easy catches and the rest in good bowling. Only Tobias got to double figures and ended 20 not out. The team was all out in the 9th over for a total of 36.

A hard lesson learnt the team turned up on Sunday to play Kampong. We always have close games with Kampong and this was to be no exception!

VCC batted first and Haris and Hasnain starting well. By the 15th over the team were 99 for 4, with Tobias and Nirav at the crease. By the 18th over they were 107 all out! This was a low score, but defendable. Tobias was again the highest scorer with 37.

To try and end the game quickly, Tobias and Nirav started the bowling and restricted the scoring while steadily taking wickets. Motivation was high and the team were cheering every dot ball. At the drinks break Kampong were 52 for 5. It looked good for us at this stage. Kampong then asked if one of their players could bat again as they were a player short. In the spirit of cricket, we agreed, but it nearly cost us the game!

Kampong’s Pravin started to bat much more easily and hitting boundaries. It took another 5 overs before the next wicket fell at 71. The last pair batted well until Nirav trapped Yash LBW in the 27th over and Kampong were all out for 99.

A nerve wrecking game ended with a good result for VCC! The whole team played well. There was good tight fielding and some spectacular one handed stops by Harmen. Mention to Elliot, who had his best spell as wicket keeper and surprised the batsman (and everyone else) with an easy run out/stumping. Tobias and Nirav took two wickets each. Nirav’s 4.3 overs went for only 8 runs and his got the same batsman out twice. Hidde and Haris took one wicket each. Hasnain bowled a great spell (under pressure) with 2 runs coming from his 2 overs and Thijn was as economical as ever.

The win against Kampong meant that VCC finished second in the poule phase of the competition.  This means that the team go through to the national playoffs. Well played everyone and good luck in the first match this weekend against HCC!
