VCC U10 v AJAX 2 – 13 June 2011

VCC rebounced from a poor start and left the opponents with a negative score.

This match was a catch up for our round 1 game which yours truly managed to overlook, so I was determined that we would get a team together.  After some last minute calls we managed to get 7 players to start the game.  Not bad for a wet long weekend Monday in Oegstgeest.  We were pleased to give Patric and Thomas their first game of cricket.  We hope to see more of you both.

We lost the toss and Patric and Jamieson opened the batting, scoring 6 and 7 respectively.  The grass was long and wet, making scoring very difficult.    Captain Joe led by example, grafting a score of 7.  Ajax continued to bowl and field very tightly.  Joseph 2, Thomas 2, Alfie 2, Shaun 3 all had to work hard for their runs.

We didn’t value our wicket much, losing a total of 9 wickets…leaving us with a net score of only 5 runs.

Fortunately the boys were completely oblivious to the fear of losing, electing instead to enjoy a cordial and a laugh between innings.  Joe rallied the troops to support each other and to do our best to defend the very small total.

“Attack is the best form of defence” seemed to be the team motto.  Our bowling was simply sensational, lead by Alfie who took 6 wickets and just missed a hat trick.  Alfie bowled with a lovely tall side on action which allowed him to swing the ball away consistently.  Shaun with 3 wickets (also including 2 in 2 balls) showed that he has enormous potential as a cricketer.  Joseph also bowled like a demon for 3 wickets.  Patric and Thomas received bowling coaching on the run.  They are obviously fast learners, each taking 2 wickets.  1 wicket also to Jam.

Ajax scored 37 runs, losing 17 wickets for a net score of -14.

A great win by VCC under extreme pressure.  Well done boys!

Many thanks to Paul, father of Patric and Thomas, who volunteered to score for the team.
