The derby in The Hague region HCC-VCC ended in a win for the Hague side. VCC made 327 runs, but weak bowling and mediocre fielding ensured that a strong batting HCC ran off with the points quite easily.
Of course, VCC can say that it had to miss its five internationals (one of whom was injured). Still, there was a team that was strong on paper but proved unable to defend 327 runs.
Cedric de Lange and Peter Hatzoglou made 98 runs at a fast pace for the first wicket. Hatzoglou was caught for 59, but De Lange continued on, also making solid partnerships with Kaplan (46) and Melville (42) and completing his first Top Class century, a very handsome innings by the 17-year-old Leidschendammer. HCC batted their way back into the match. Overs 42, 43 and 44 yielded VCC just ten runs.
Perhaps VCC thought it was on a roll with 327 runs on the board, but that was belied. From ball one, HCC went for the win, knowing that there was nothing for the bowlers to get in the dead-looking pitch. Captain Boris Gorlee led the handsome and successful runchase with 122 runs; Yash Patel remained with 51 not out. VCC’s bowling and fielding was mediocre; short bowling proved no winning tactic on the Hague postage stamp pitch.
Other Hague teams
At a score of 57/3, HBS looked to be struggling against Sparta (210 all out). Both bowling (three wickets) and batting (a crucial 85) appealed to the experience of 41-year-old Wesley Barresi. Top class standings: Hermes DVS, Kampong 3-6; HCC, VCC, VRA 3-4; Punjab, HBS, Excelsior 3-2; VOC and Sparta 3-0. In the premier league, Quick Hg (190) managed to hold off VRA 2 (143 all out) with some difficulty, thanks mainly to an all-round performance by Bob van Gigch (three wickets and four catches).
