In memory of Wim Thoms

Wim Thoms, a former member of VCC, passed away Wednesday November 25th. Wim was in the sixties and seventies one of the many players who combined football at TONEGIDO with cricket.

Wim was an allrounder and in these days the best fielder of the club. Wit bat and ball he was also useful. A genuine leftie, who pulled many a ball for a boundary over square, and a fine change bowler. In 1971, he was a key player in VCC 1’s title race with more than 200 runs at an average of well over 20. In those days, with low scores and high grass, this was quite an achievement.

In 93 innings he scored 1101 runs, with 60 as top score. He took 95 wickets in nearly 500 overs conceding 1084 runs. A change bowler with an economy rate of a little over 2 and 11,14 average. Times have changed indeed with batsmen on top nowadays.

Above all he was a team player with a cheerful approach to the game – and life. He was known for his encouraging yell ‘Forward, Voorburg!’, when things didn’t go well while fielding. In terms of cricket a bit difficult but we all got the drift as he led by example. A great guy for the club, on the ground, for a beer after the match and ‘the Chinese’ in de Herenstraat later.

For his football club club Wim played as left back in the first team for well over a decade. After that he sat on the board for more than 30 years. He was honorary member, in the footsteps of his mother in both ways. For VCC he remained involved as owner of ‘Thoms Autobanden’ as a very welcome sponsor, especially in the first VCC years at the highest level. Sport in Voorburg at large is greatly indebted to Wim.

Our thoughts are with his families and friends.
