Memories of Alfred van Bunge (1946-2024)

Some people you remember by default with a smile on their face. Alfred van Bunge was among that group. Alfred was always friendly and a real mood setter. He enjoyed making small talk with everyone and had a strong relatable sense of humor. In the 1980s, Mike Vroom and I, among others, were on VCC’s Sponsorship Committee, which was chaired by Alfred. We met in the office of his company Bunchhouse on the Voorburg Herenstraat. He would light a cigar and start orating infectiously about everything that could be improved within VCC in the field of PR. He never judged anyone or was negative. They were constructive thoughts of a creative mind, in which he hoped we would then run and fly to make his brainchildren a reality. “That’s fun anyway,” he invariably concluded with a broad smile on his face. Alfred had an excellent feel for making news. This was evident when we started using our first bowling machine in the 1980s. The parallel pointed out by Alfred to Jeff Wayne’s “War of the Worlds” (based on the book by H.G. Wells) effortlessly made the media. Despite the departure of his sons Job, Coen and Daan to other clubs, Alfred still visited VCC from time to time on the scooter. Alfred was very committed to the beauty of his beloved Voorburg and therefore held various administrative positions, such as with the Beautiful Voorburg Foundation and the Prince Marianne Heritage Foundation. He was also the driving force behind the Voorburginsite website. We will miss his perspicacity, enthusiasm and generous smile. Job, Coen and Daan and their wives and children, we wish them strength from the undoubtedly countless beautiful and loving memories of their wonderful father, father-in-law and grandfather.
