Rebuilt VCC women’s team shows its talent versus Kampong

The VCC Women got off to a flying start of the season with a victory against an experienced Kampong team in Utrecht. Under the leadership of captain Carlijn van Koolwijk and Dutch International Rosalie Lawrence, the ladies were put in to bat and got off to an assured start with Rosalie and Audrey putting on an opening stand of 25. Rosalie was eventually bowled for 17 runs off 15 balls. Carlijn then steadied the ship further with an assured 15 off 30 balls as Carlijn and Audrey moved the total on to 59 with a partnership of 33. After Audrey was run out for 11, debutant for VCC and Dutch Under-19 player Ana Wijffels, fresh into the team after arriving from New Zealand, struck a quick fire 51 off 29 balls, striking at 175.86 and helping VCC on to an imposing target of 132/7 off their 20 overs.

In reply, the bowling was opened by two Dutch Lionesses, Milou and Ashmeet who have been given the opportunity to play senior cricket at VCC alongside their youth commitments. Milou took the prized wicket of one of the Kampong openers with her first ever ball in senior cricket, finishing with figures of 1/10 off her four overs, whilst Ashmeet bowled well finishing with 0/19. Ashmeet and Milou were supported by Carlijn (1/9) and Ana (1/18) with Anjana, Leela and Audrey also contributing to the effort with the ball and Willemijn making her debut in the field, which restricted Kampong to 101/5 off their allotted overs.

Thank you especially to Red and White and Qui Vive for encouraging their girls to take up the opportunity to play senior ladies cricket alongside their commitment to playing in the youth sections of their clubs.

A superb victory with 5 players making their senior debuts – on to next week’s local derby with HCC!
