Revenge for the Zomis

A surprisingly straightforward victory for the Zomi, against opponents (Qui Vive) who had defeated us comfortably in the first game. The game was played on a pitch which might be best described as up and down (with some particularly spectacular ups), and we were lucky enough to field first (a good toss to lose …). The tone was set from the first ball, which yielded a sharp low catch by Rutger at cover, and this initial breakthrough was followed by hostile and economical spells from the two opening bowlers, Wouter (7-0-13-2) and Gaurav (7-0-18-0). The other bowlers (James, Kobus, and newcomers Rohit and Madhu) also contributed spell tights, and, supported by fielding which was considerably better than last week, restricted Qui Vive to 144-8 in their 35 overs. Not a large score, but worth at least 20 runs more, given the behaviour of the pitch and the slowness of the outfield, so that there was some apprehensiveness about whether we could reach the target, especially as we had only just managed to reach 100 in the first match. We need not have worried. Batting sensibly, but not afraid to go for their shots, the openers, Rutger (57*) and Madhu (51), put together a record partnership of 122, and we won the match by 8 wickets in the 29th over. An overdue – and enjoyable – victory!
