Rood & Wit – VCC Ladies

It was a beautiful day for the first game of the season. Julia Corder trained her successor Annemijn van Beuge well as Annemijn won her first toss: VCC went to bat first.

During the first inning, Iris Zwilling was our rock. She scored a nice total of 74 runs and laid a solid foundation. At the end, she got help from Eva Lynch who scored another nice 26 runs. We finished with 146 runs on the board.

After a few awkward signals from the umpire (Annemijn), the scorers (aka everyone) managed to get everything right and we entered the field with sweets from Fleur Roscam-Abbing to start the second inning. Despite having only nine players, we showed great resilience and strategic play.

Rosalie Lawrence, the wicketkeeper, delivered a fantastic performance by taking three catches behind the stumps. Meanwhile, Carlijn picked up three wickets with her accurate and powerful bowling, making it difficult for Red & White to score. Donna Polet, who tried spin bowling in a match for the first time, impressed with her performance. These overs and VCC’s well laid out field created pressure on Red & White’s well batting Heather Siegers. Opportunities were created and after a few missed catches, Heather was sidelined by the wicket of Julia after scoring 79 runs. Grace Ward-Clayton, bowling for the first time in the VCC outfit, bowled an excellent first over and gave away no extras.

All in all, it was a team effort that made for a fun, exciting match in which VCC drew the longer straw. We celebrated the victory with a beer at VCC and look forward to the next game.

Hope to see you then!
