VCC nearly chokes Sparta: 217-190

Cedric de Lange (16) maakte een volwassen 50

VCC nearly choked off the number two seed, Sparta, in Capelle. VCC was sent in by the Capellenarians and made 217 runs. At a score of 66 for five for Sparta – in reply to the VCC total – the race seemed to be over, but thanks to 84 runs by Juandre Scheepers, Sparta (190) still came eerily close. HBS and HCC also won their matches.

Michael Levitt let a ball go that hit the top of his offstump. Cedric de Lange, who is making great strides and will soon represent the Dutch under-19 youth team in Denmark, made a handsome 50. Together with Gavin Kaplan, the 16-year-old lefthander modelled a partnership of 116 runs for the second wicket. Kaplan, who was simply missed on a personal score of nine runs, maintained his composure and was once again very important to his team. Thanks to his 107 runs, the foundation was laid for a score of around 250 runs. Sloppiness toward the end, however, led to VCC being all out for 217. Cameron Fraser took 5 for 45.

At 58/4 and 66/5, Sparta seemed to be hanging in the ropes. Juandre Scheepers, however, took on the role of “anchor man” and made a fantastic 84. When Michael Levitt took his third catch, sending Scheepers to the sidelines, Sparta’s resistance was finally broken and VCC escaped with a scare. Gavin Kaplan took four wickets and further notable were the good performances of VCC’s “homegrown”: Alejo Nota 2-29, Floris de Lange 2-13.

Also wins for HBS and HCC

HCC (246/6 with five individual scores above 36 runs) had no problem with ACC, which was all out for 101 runs. Daniel Crowley and Jed Wiggins each took three wickets for the Hague side. Yash Patel (previously 55 runs) also had a fine day as a keeper with two catches and a stumping.

HBS (288/5, Matthew de Villers 80, Kyle Klein 62 not out) put up a hefty score against Hermes DVS, which could only counter this with 182 all out with Daniel Doyle (65) as top scorer. Kyle Klein delivered a great all-around performance at 4-36.

These results favorable to the Hague region could result in all three “Hague” clubs soon being allowed to compete in the championship pool. July 21 is the final round of play in the first phase. HBS must then travel to VRA, while champion 2022 HCC travels to Voorburg for the derby against reigning national champion VCC. On July 20, VCC 1 will play – also “at home” the catch-up game against Hermes DVS.

Standings as of 14/7/24: Punjab 8-12, HBS 8-11, Voorburg CC 7-10, Excelsior 8-9, HCC 7-9, VRA 7-8, VOC and Hermes DVS 7-5, Sparta 8-4, ACC 7-1.
