After the disappointing “rainout” of the away game against VRA on a freezing spring day, Voorburg CC took control against Hermes DVS on Saturday, May 31. The weakened Schiedammers – Doyle on international duty for Spain, Olivier Elenbaas unable to bowl due to injury – were beaten 269-162.
VCC batted first after losing the toss. An intermediate score of 158 runs and five batters out – both of whom Croes and Melville registered half centuries and Cedric de Lange 27 runs – initially seemed to justify that Schiedam choice. However, hefty partnerships in the late middle order and tail ensured that the “momentum” returned to the Voorburg side. Sebastiaan Braat (four wickets) could not prevent as many as seven Voorburgers from getting into double figures. Nashier, Mumba and Charumbira ensured in the final overs that the fine score of 269 runs appeared on the board.
Tom de Leede bowled Ostling with a beauty and Viv Kingma charged fellow internationals Dutt and Elenbaas. At a score of 51 runs and six people out, the match seemed to be played. Significantly, the highest Hermes scores came from batsmen seven, eight and nine, Braat, Ralph Elenbaas and Kothari. Noah Croes made three victims as keeper and four VCC bowlers took two wickets each. This further underlined the fine team performance.
