Beautiful blue skies and a picture perfect green ground greeted us at Ajax. We were a little confused when we saw Annemijn also arriving with hockey stick in hand but then we remembered she is not just a talented cricketer but a rising hockey star too, playing on the ground next to us. We were grateful for the addition of Josh and Martijn to our team, meaning that we were able to field 6 players this week. A game of football with our opposition, followed by some fielding drills and the VCC boys were ready for action. Captain Josh called correctly and wisely elected to field. Our bowling was top notch this week. We got of to the best possible start when Billy hit the stumps with his first delivery. Our fielding was sound with 3 run outs, but we need to remember to back up the stumps at both ends and always watch the ball. Our best bowler this week was Billy who bowled stump to stump to take 3 wickets bowled. He was closely followed by Vivek who took 2 wickets including a great caught and bowled. Alfie and Jamieson each took a wicket and Martijn and Josh came close to hitting the stumps several times. Ajax scored 77 runs for the loss of 10 wickets, leaving them with net 47.
The new boys Josh and Martijn opened the batting. Things looked a little shaky when we lost 4 wickets in the first two overs but then the guys clicked into gear, scoring freely. Martijn hit 3 huge sixes to finish our top scorer with 28 runs. Josh scored 12 including 2 good pull shots to the boundary. Jamieson kept the scoreboard racing with 22 runs including 3 boundaries. Vivek ran like a demon between the wickets to score 9. Billy finished off his great game, scoring 15 with 2 boundaries, sharing a nice partnership with Alfie to finish our innings. VCC scored 90 runs for the loss of 6 wickets to finish with net 72 and a win.
