Na wel-niet (uiteindelijk niet) spelen tegen Ajax op vrijdagmiddag werd er zondagmorgen in alle vroegte wel gespeeld door onze mannen van de woensdagafdeling van U-11. De eerste wedstrijd in de kampioenspoule tegen ACC stond op het programma. De eerste winst werd al behaald nog voordat de wedstrijd begonnen was. Captain Cedric won de toss en besloot om te beginnen met batten.
De umpires hadden nog wat last van de zomerstop en gaven een imitatie van de lamme en de blinde weg. Gelukkig had onze umpire vrij snel in de gaten dat hij zijn bril niet op had en dat kwam de kwaliteit al snel ten goede. Het werd nu gelijk duidelijk waarom het eerste paar (de gebroeders Trugg, Bo en Steven) wat moeite hadden om op gang te komen: de wedstrijdbal was een senior bal. Nadat de Truggs het ijs gebroken hadden, kwamen Tom en Jonathan een master class batten weggeven. Met snel oplopen, rake klappen en zelfs twee zesjes vergrootte VCC de score van 15 naar 70 runs. Of we niet al genoeg family affair gehad hadden kwam als derde paar de Notatjes (Ger en Alejo) de arena in. Met de derde Nota als umpire hield het publiek de adem in . . . Maar met goed team spel en een zesje van Alejo liep VCC al snel verder uit. Als vierde paar kwamen Stefan en Miraj in actie. Gedegen lieten ze de score verder oplopen, waarna Cedric en Philip de laatste overs wegsloegen. Mede door een zesje van Cedric zette VCC een totaal van 177 runs neer. Enig minpunt waren de 9 wickets die verloren waren gegaan.
Als ACC nog hoop had werd die al vroeg in de tweede inning de bodem in geslagen. In record tempo werden de eerste 6 overs weg gebowled: 5 wickets genomen en slechts 14 runs gemaakt door ACC. Alhoewel het snel duidelijk was dat ACC nog wat te kort kwam gaven onze gasten het niet op. Ze bleven onverstoord doorgaan met de score een meer draaglijk uiterlijk te geven, waarvan hulde. Het enige dat ze van de wijs wist te brengen, was een eenzame wesp die het op de batsman voorzien had. Uiteindelijk slaagde ACC er net niet in om de 100 runs te bereiken, ze bleven steken op 99 runs. Dit kwam mede doordat VCC erin slaagde nog 3 wickets te nemen, waarvan er twee van grote klasse waren. Een run-out gemaakt door Ger die van grote afstand met een strakke bal de wicket wist te raken. Maar Philip maakte de mooiste actie van de dag. Als bowler wist hij middels een snoekduik met 1 hand de bal te vangen, waarvan hulde.
Na deze verpletterende overwinning wacht nog 1 horde op weg naar het kampioenschap. Als onze jongens ook uit bij Ajax in Oegstgeest de punten binnen weten te slepen, zijn ze de meer dan terechte, want ongeslagen, kampioen. Op naar vrijdag als de kampioenswedstrijd gespeeld wordt, of toch niet . . . met Ajax weet je het immers nooit.

After playing /not-playing (finally not) last Friday against Ajax, our boys of U-11 (Wednesday) did play Sunday early morning in Voorburg against ACC. It was time for their first match in the Champions League. Before the play really started VCC had their first win. Captain Cedric did win the toss and his choice was to start batting.
The umps did still have some difficulty to get used after the summer stop. They tried to give an imitation of the lame and the blind. Fortunately our ump realized pretty soon he did forget to take his glasses on. Adding his specs helped a lot and now it became get clear why the first pair (the Truggs brothers Bo and Steven) did have some difficulty to start batting: the used ball was a senior ball. After the Truggs did get the first scores on the board, Tom and Jonathan as second pair did give a master class batting. With good running and nice hits (two sixers for Tom) they increased the score from 15 to 70 runs. In pair three another family affair appeared when the Nota brothers (Ger and Alejo) started batting under the eyes of Nota senior as ump. The audience got tensed as this can result in an explosive situation. This time fortunately only the balls did explode, with amongst others a sixer of Alejo. Next pair Stefan and Miraj stand solidly resulting in an increasing score. Cedric and Philip were batting the final overs. With a sixer of Cedric an amazing score of 177 runs was achieved. Only in the loss of 9 wickets improvement seems to be possible.
If ACC did still have any hope, then they did lose it after the first overs. In record time the first 6 overs were bowled by VCC resulting in 5 wickets taken and only 14 runs made by ACC. But although it was clear ACC would not win, they did not give up and showed the spirit of the game. Only wasps could disturb them. In the end ACC did just miss the 100 runs and they closed the match with 99 runs made. In the last part VCC did take another 3 wickets, with two of them with excellent play. Ger managed to hit the wicket from far away resulting in a run out, but the most beautiful action of the match was by Philip. He manged as bowler to catch the ball in one hand while making a dive. Double bravo.
After this big result there is still one match waiting before the U-11 can celebrate the championship. If they manage to win as well in Oegstgeest against Ajax then they will be the well-deserved champions, as they have won all their matches till date. We can’t wait till their final match on Friday. Although with Ajax you never know if the match will be played on the scheduled date . . . .
