VCC 2 – Wanica Star (3. June 2018)

VCC 2 - Wanica Star (3. june 2018)

Sunday 3rd of June was the 5th league match for VCC 2 at home against Wanica Star (4th being rained off). It was a beautiful sunny day for cricket with the pitch and outfield still being slightly wet in the morning. Based on that captain Abbass won the toss and decided to bowl first, hoping that the wicket would dry up as the game progressed.

VCC 2 bowlers started off decently, going for a run rate of 4 an over and getting wickets regularly. At drinks it would seem that the opposition would be all out for a low total (where VCC 2 had claimed 6 wickets). However, this is when Wanica Star started to bat sensibly putting a price on their wicket and established a couple good partnerships. With the help of extras (mainly wides) and some dropped catches from Ahsan, Sono and Alyan, the opposition recovered well and ended up putting 186 on the board. It was an inning where all bowlers contributed and took wickets. However, with his tight bowling, Atif (Zaka) stood out once again claiming 3 for 21 in his 7 overs.

After lunch and high on confidence, it was time for the batsmen to chase a chasable score on a good batting wicket. But, some good line and length bowling by the opposition ensured a low scoring rate, after which VCC 2 lost the wicket of Atif (Aziz) cheaply. Remco, coming in at, had other ideas and increased the run rate cleverly with captain Abbass. However, just when both batsmen seemed settled, Remco lost his wicket. At this point VCC was 41 for 2 after 10 overs. Normally opening the batting, Adwait, came in at 4 and put on a good partnership with Abbass, helping VCC to recover and continue at a steady run rate (altough, there was some hesitant running between the wickets). After an important 50 plus partnership, both settled batsmen lost their wickets. However, unlike a collapse happening like previous matches, both Sono and Alyan established another good partnership, scoring at the required run rate and brought the game closer to a win. At the end it was VCC 2’s lower middle order that saw the game won with 1 ball to spare.

Altough still early into the season, VCC has noticed some points they should be improving and will be looking to do just that. Having lost their previous match, they claimed the top spot in the league once again and will be hoping to continue their winning habit.

Performances of the match:

Adwait 34,  Sono 29, Abbass 28, Atif (Zaka) 3-21 and Faisal 2-29

Highlights of the match

  • A reflex catch by Adwait at short cover off Faisal’s swing bowling.
  • A low catch taken by Remco behind the stumps, edged off Floris’ bowling (breaking an important partnership).
  • A beautiful bowled wicket taken by Atif (Zaka), hitting the off stump at great pace.
  • Bowling over the wicket to a left hander Kashif cleverly went around the wicket and bowled the batsman out that very ball!
